Birdwatching

Where to go birdwatching in Germignaga

The cycle path that goes from Germignaga to Mesenzana skirts a river called the Margorabbia and runs through ploughed or cultivated land, small woods and a few moist areas.
In such a mosaic of environments it is easy for birds to find a place where they can rest and make their nests.
Looking towards the river you could see a blue and orange bird skim the water quickly while giving out a shrill whistle: it is the kingfisher. Near the river it is also possible to see a pale ash grey heron staring at the water, ready to sprint in order to catch a fish.
Especially in Spring many kinds of sparrows stop in the fields to have a rest during their seasonal migration: wheatears, meadow pipits, whinchats, stonechats and yellow wagtails are all easily visible through binoculars in the open country. From mid-March to August, you only need a little patience to catch sight of the big dark shape of a brown kite, a bird of prey that winters in Africa and reaches our latitudes to reproduce itself.
